All About Shane

It's been a while since I've posted, so I'll throw an update out about both boys separately. So we gave up on acupuncture with Shane. Although I believe acupuncture is great for many reasons, I came to the conclusion there was something else going on with Shane and his tics - an outside factor (food allergy, deficient mineral) that had to be changed, or his tics wouldn't change. Kind of like hitting yourself with a hammer repeatedly and wondering why it won't stop hurting.

So Jill referred us to a natropath (natural doctor). Kind of hard to explain what they do, but they have this sensor thing that they press to certain areas of the hands and feet, and it can measure sensitivities to foods, plants, animals, etc. and also reads the levels of minerals in the body. I don't get it, but I know it works because it detected a vaccination and I said there shouldn't be any, so she narrowed it down and it ended up being the flu shot we got 6 months before that the body was still processing. Wow!

Anyway, she determined that Shane has a sensitivity to pine, some other trees/plants, cats, yellow corn and gluten. None were severe, but could be bad enough to cause a nervous system stressor which could result in worse tics.

In the end, Shane needs to take magnesium, fish oil and garlic. Those 3 items should balance out the reaction to any allergens he encounters. Since we've been taking it, things have leveled out with his tics. He still has them, but they're much less severe and some days barely noticeable.

It will be interesting to see how things are in September, since that's when they were really bad last year.

So 3rd grade was a little rocky for Shane. He was doing great until multiplication came along. Then the last semester things weren't getting turned in, homework wasn't coming home, etc. Shane has a history of shutting down the last couple months of school. But we made it through, learned the times table and ended up with a pretty great report card. I'm having Shane use the online program time4learning.com to basically go back over the 3rd grade math curriculum. He excels in other subjects, just doesn't grasp math as quickly.

Shane's glad it's summer and it's nice that almost all the kids in the neighborhood have stay at home moms so he can play with them all day long.
